Alicia O'Hara is a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, Certified Behavioral Therapist and founder of Trance to Change Hypnotherapy.
"I began studying alternative therapies in 2004 for the benefit of my own personal growth. And through my experiences, I soon realized I was helping others do the same. In 2006, I discovered and became educated in the specialized techniques of Clinical Hypnotherapy and Behavioral Therapy at the California Institute of Healing Arts and Sciences.

Where Does Hypnotherapy Come From?
Hypnosis comes from the Greek word "Hypnos" which means "sleep". Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to achieve a trance or "sleep-like" state. The use of a trance for the purpose of healing goes back thousands of years and can be historically found in many "indigenous cultural groups from ancient Egypt, to Greece, Africa, South America, the Pacific Islands, Asia, North America, and beyond."
Although trance work has been around for thousands of years, hypnosis as we know it today first found its popularity in the extravagant acts of Franz Anton Mesmer in the 1770's. Mesmer is best known for his abilities to "mesmerize" his audience and relieved them from their illnesses. Although his techniques were considered elaborate, they worked, initiating nearly two centuries of research and study by researchers, priests, doctors, and phychiatrists, all working towards "creating an atmosphere for hypnosis to emerge as a reputable science".
By 1958, hypnosis became recognized by the American Medical Association in part due to the successful works of Milton Erickson. Erickson's "unmatched genius and ability to create innovative strategies for healing and change" contributed to this recognition of hypnosis in the medical community.
Today, hypnotherapy is recognized and used by a variety of both licensed and certified practitioners, helping countless people overcome their challenges and achieve their goals. Hypnotherapy works by quieting the conscious mind, the thinking, analytical part of your mind, and opens up direct communication with your subconscious mind, your inner knowledge, for the purpose of helping you to create change.
So how do you open up that direct communication to the subconscious mind?
Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to achieve a trance or sleep-like state. We are often in this trance state many times throughout the day. Imagine you are driving, you have left one location and you are on your way to another. Once you have reached your destination you have no conscious memory of how you got there, yet you got there safely. This is simply a trance state. You were able to move your conscious mind out of the way and were working directly with your subconscious mind, still maintaining complete control.
So how does hypnotherapy work to help you move past your challenges?
