Colon Health in Carmichael CA
If you are over the magical age of forty, you have probably heard along the way that it's a good idea to get your colon checked out with a colonoscopy. Just the thought of it can bring some anxiety, nervousness and maybe even a little tear. Fortunately, they have come up with some innovative ways that we really don't have to endure so much discomfort. This is one of the only times at our clinic in Carmichael CA that you will ever hear me yell - Give Me Drugs!!
Colon Facts in Carmichael CA
Let's talk a little about the anatomy and physiology of the colon. The digestive tract process starts in the mouth, to the throat, then the esophagus, into the stomach and finally through both the small and large (colon) intestines. Did you know that the small intestine (22') is longer than the large intestine (6')? My daughter taught me that one. After being in the stomach for about an hour and having the body's digestive juices break it down, food is then transported to the small intestine. Absorption of any nutrients takes place here through little microvillus that then pass it through into the bloodstream. After several hours of giving the small intestine a chance to absorb the nutrients, the leftover waste that was not absorbed is then passed on to the colon. The passage opening in the colon should be about 2 inches in diameter. Seems pretty simple, doesn't it? But here is where the problems start to arise.
With a toxic diet of bad fats, high protein, high sugar and processed foods, the buildup of rotting debris that cannot be digested will start to build layers on the colon walls and make the passage opening shrink in size. This is when blockage will occur. You will know you have this when you are straining on the bowl or the only things you are producing are hard, little pellets. Not a great sign.
So we know that a bad diet can contribute to this problem but what other factors play a part in it? There are some who, when they hear the word bacteria, think it's gross or disgusting. But in the colon, this is what we call probiotics. This is the type of bacteria that is helpful in the final stage of digestion and eliminating anything that is of no use to the body. Probiotics also help in fighting off the bad bacteria that invade the body. We have heard that upon autopsy, at least half of all men over age 75 have prostate cancer but only a small percentage actually die from it. That is because of probiotics hard at work fighting off bad organisms such as cancer, E Coli, Candida, staph or strep.
So probiotics are absolutely essential for us, right? But when these probiotics are constantly being killed off by use of antibiotics, antibiotics in the animals whose meat we eat, antacids, NSAIDS (Advil, Tylenol, Motrin, etc), any prescription medications, antihistamines, some waters and, of course, a bad diet, this does not typically end very well. The bacteria were not the cause of the problem, but all the culprits listed above. Undigested food becomes way too much for the body to handle and eventually sits and rots in the lining of the colon. It was somewhat easy to get away with this when we were in our teens and through our twenties and maybe even our thirties, but once we get up into our fabulous forties there is absolutely no way the body can handle all this built-up plaque in the colon walls.
This over-accumulation of undigested wastes will also inhibit peristalsis-which is a normal rhythmic muscular action of the intestine that helps in pushing food down and outward through the body. If peristalsis is inhibited, this will cause even more blockage. Additionally, the built up plaque can cause and has been linked with mutation of the colon lining cells- which we know as gastric cancer. Because cell damage is caused by constant blockage, after a certain amount of time, mutation will eventually occur.
So, after reading this, are you ready to hit the nearest McDonald's for a couple of Big Macs, fries and a Coke? If so, wait until you read up on Leaky Gut Syndrome. You really don't have to be trained to understand what this is. Just the name itself speaks volumes because that's exactly what is going on-the gut (digestive tract) is so filled up with sludge and non-digestible debris causing blockage that the inner membranes begin to leak out. Some of the toxic debris forces itself out of the walls of the colon, along with water and electrolytes, and into the bloodstream. So now the blood is actually poisoned from what has happened in the colon. Hard to believe this is happening in our bodies, but very true. Once this is in our bloodstream, a whole lot of different things can occur and none of them are very good. Mainly, chronic inflammation that builds up and gradually the irritant will find any organ or tissue to basically set up shop in. Slowly over time, the death of that organ or tissue will take place.
These are some of the major conditions that may occur from this autointoxication or self poisoning:
- Chronic allergies
- Kidney/Liver disease
- Acne
- Headaches
- Arthritis
- Chronic fatigue
- Depression
- Autoimmune disorders
- Fibromyalgia
- Cancer
Acid reflux/Heartburn/reflux/Gerd: I don't put this under the major conditions because, well to be honest, they are all conditions that are caused by complete disregard of the body's temple. I may offend you here if you do suffer from any one of these conditions but hopefully you'll love me in the morning. If you are on an antacid or Prilosec or any of the other ridiculous products out there, you really have no excuse and probably headed for much worse if this pattern continues. These medications are not solving the problem, but actually causing more serious issues with prolonged use. This is not a genetic thing or you were not predisposed to it or because you had a bad childhood, this is just being completely careless of something that you have complete control over.
Remember, by taking these medications you are just suppressing the underlying cause - blocked pipes. By introducing these medications or laxatives, you are only getting temporary relief and in the process exposing your colon to a corrosive irritant with many side effects. By taking these medications, you are "turning off" the stomach acids by inhibiting hydrochloric acid (HCL). Again, relief for a few days but by inhibiting HCL, you are also turning off digestion. Without HCL, the body cannot break down proteins. So what happens? It sits there and rots and just accumulates with the rest of the toxic stuff you have sitting in there. Additionally, as we mentioned earlier, the good bacteria (probiotics) are gradually killed off by these medications.
After awhile, these compacted layers of the colon lining become irritated and start to inflame the mucosal cells. Inflammation of the colon, or colitis, is a precursor to cancer.
While we are on the subject, let's briefly talk about colon cancer. Most of us know what cancer is-altered or mutated cells. When we lose our probiotics, the good bacteria, the toxic buildup of all the undigested foods from the past begin to accumulate and start to affect the cells of the colon lining. Now the cell has main two functions: nutrition and waste removal. But in this case, it cannot perform these duties. So what happens: they die or they mutate.
There are lots of other conditions associated with the colon, like Crohn's disease which is basically when sections of the colon itself begin to collapse and they become narrow (called strictures) and eventually blocked up with all this cement like waste. By now, it's very difficult to try and push any waste past these narrow passages and it then becomes a haven for parasites and the bad type of bacteria.
Also, there is spastic colon which occurs when we try to expel all this toxic waste out of our system. The violent and desperate pushing can cause cramping and spasm of the colon wall.
The colon is a magical place, a place that early healers described as the life center of the body and the place where death begins. Unfortunately, today it is seen more as a toxic sewer. But the fact is that colon cancer is now one of the top cancers in our country and the rate is growing faster and faster each day. Now is the time to not improve your digestive condition but to possibly reverse the condition.
